You’ve done it. I’ve done it. Everyone has done it, which is why there are literally THOUSANDS of blog posts, pins, and articles about it. When it comes down to it, choosing the ‘right’ paint color for your room may not be life or death, but it can FEEL like it if you choose one you aren’t happy with. Most people know how important it is, so why do people still choose the wrong paint color??
We’re in a hurry
When we’re rushed to choose a paint color for a last-minute paint project (maybe you have a guest coming over or you’re hosting a dinner, etc), we don’t take the time to do the important steps required to make the right decision for the space. There are SOOOOO many options that being rushed can easily lead to a hasty decision. There are so many aspects of color theory that we don’t take the time to analyze before we choose our paint color when we’re in a hurry.
We’re inspired by a color we see in Instagram/Pinterest
It happens ALL. THE. TIME. We see a room on Pinterest or our Insta feed that is SO perfect it would make ANY room look good. We don’t need to analyze anything else about the room – we LOVE the color, and we have a room to paint, so we rush to the store and get that exact color mixed up – pronto! But when we start rolling the color on our walls in our room, we think the associate at the store MUST have gotten the formula wrong.
I, for one, cannot handle having too many options. When there are more than a handful of ‘good’ choices, I crumble every time… because it’s too hard to make the right decision! And paint options?? THERE ARE LITERALLY COUNTLESS OPTIONS OUT THERE. We’ve all been in the paint/home improvement store holding on to 17 paint chips, a toddler, a bottle of water (for the toddler), and our patience by a very fine thread. There are no less than 10 people behind us, and even though we’ve been staring at all 17 of the colors and think we have an idea which one would work best, we still aren’t SURE. Could we maybe try and make this a bit more stressful?
The good news is that there is a foolproof way to pick the right paint color every single time. Say whaaa??? It does require a little bit of planning in advance, but nothing too extensive. Here are my tried-and-true tips for getting it right for your room the first time!
Take your time
Pump the breaks, sister. It’s paint… which means it’s going to be on your walls and affect the way your room looks and feels for a WHILE. Is it permanent? No. But are you going to want to re-paint soon? Also no. So plan the necessary time to go through the next steps, and make sure you’re making a solid choice!
Remember the important things
Few things are as critical in choosing a paint color as light. How the room is lit, whether with natural light or artificial light, has everything to do with how the color will ultimately look on your walls. That room you saw on Pinterest that had the perfect color? Not only are there 3 walls of 20-foot-tall windows casting light on that perfect dark griege hue (while your room has 2 tiny windows)… that photo has been filtered TO. DEATH. and your room will literally never look like that. Which is why there is only one real way to pick the perfect color…
Try sample colors in your room.
Repeat after me: I solemnly swear to paint swatches of different colors on my walls before deciding on a paint color. Now repeat it again. I recommend getting at least 3-5 colors in the color family you’re considering and painting swatches on every wall in the room. Make sure some of them are against any trim/border so you can see the contrast of the paint color to your existing trim. WHY on every wall? Because you may LOVE a color on one wall, but it could look awful on the opposite wall due to lighting. Sampling the colors in the room before committing is truly the only foolproof way to see how a color ‘feels’ in your room before painting the entire room, too. Does this step take time? Yes. But it is NECESSARY.
